World Heritage National Park Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park was recognized by UNESCO since 2003, with criteria viii geology - geomorphology. In the process of heritage management, realize the value of biodiversity brought global prominence should be further identified, to protect under the provisions of the World Heritage Convention and the law of Vietnam, Prime Prime Minister issued Decision No. 1062 / QD-TTg of July 5, 2013, expanding the area of the National Park Phong Nha - Ke Bang from 85.754ha up 123.326ha. On this basis, scientists and heritage managers have built nomination 2nd expand National Park Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park boundary under study was the Prime Minister agrees.
Prominent Global Value National Park Phong Nha - Ke Bang World Heritage Committee recognized based on 03 criteria defined in Guiding the World Heritage Convention, namely:
1. Achieving the criteria of geology - geomorphology and biodiversity:
- Criteria (viii) National Park Phong Nha - Ke Bang contributes to the understanding of the geology, geomorphology and the historical period of the region. System caves in Phong Nha - Ke Bang stored batch of old messages; is evidence of changes in the system of underground rivers, accretion, accumulation, forming stalactites in caves amazing. Heritage has the natural landscape is very attractive, which, Son Doong cave, was first discovered in 2009, is considered the largest natural underground cave world.
- Criteria (ix): Ecosystem caves and the fauna and flora living in the National Park Phong Nha - Ke Bang extremely unique, including many species at risk of extinction and dependents cave system. Heritage is covered with 84% of special-use forests, the ecosystems of tropical rain forests has global importance.
- Criterion (x): Contains system rich biodiversity, with more than 2,700 plant species, 800 species of plants, including 133 species of trees and 104 species at risk of extinction worldwide.
