International Museum Association supports the museums and monuments in Nepal


After two earthquakes at Nepal

Two earthquakes occurred on 04/25/2015 and 12/05/2015 date has severely affected many world heritage sites in Nepal. Especially, in Katmandu valley area, two earthquake completely destroyed more than 30 monuments and museums, simultaneously, serious damage 120 monuments and museums.
After this disaster, with the expert guidance of the International Center for Research on conservation and preservation of cultural property (ICCROM) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the Association of Protection International Museum (ICOM) has a cooperation agreement with the Smithsonian Institution, USA, conducted two missions to provide solutions to the conservation of cultural heritage in Nepal, but still comply with the request of Nepal and UNESCO .
The first task, which was conducted in late May 5/2015, is to increase emergency assistance for local professionals timely rescue of cultural heritage was damaged and assess the urgent need to protect the tangible heritage and intangible in areas affected by earthquakes. The expert group has surveyed the world heritage area in Katmandu, Patan, Swyambhu and National Museum of Nepal, Hanuman Dhoka Museum, identified the structure should be preserved about 6,000 emergency and related artifacts important to be relocated from dangerous areas and stored at a safe place.
The second task is "urgent support of Nepal's cultural heritage and minimize the risks" (First Aid to Nepal's Cultural Heritage and risk reduction). The purpose of this task is to organize training courses for museum professionals and volunteers of Nepal for the conservation, emergency relocation and safe storage of important collections from the areas affected by earthquake.
